Asbestos
Asbestos, once accepted in the construction and insulation industries as a wonder
material has now been recognised world wide as a material that is potentially
harmful to health.
To ensure that health hazards presented by Asbestos are minimised the Introduction
of Regulation 4 Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (CAWR) 2002 has been
implemented. This regulation has created an explicit duty on owners or occupiers
of Non-Domestic Premises. This duty requires the Location -Assessment - and
Management of Asbestos Containing Materials (acms) within Buildings and common
parts (communal areas) of housing developments and blocks of flats.
The initial requirement is to determine the presence of Asbestos by method of an
Asbestos Survey.
Samples may be extracted from materials to determine by laboratory analysis if
Asbestos is present.
If Asbestos materials are found to be in good condition, their very presence
needs recording to prevent any future accidental damage.
If Asbestos materials are found to present in less than good condition they
present a health risk and should either be treated to reduce the possibility of
fibre release or be removed.
Whichever method is preferred, works should be carried out by a Licensed
Contractor working in partnership with a UKAS Accredited Occupational Analyst.
Asbestos removal operations are subject to stringent regulations and complex
legislation. If removal works are required it is to be carried out safely and to a
good standard. All parties must follow a detailed specification and works must be
conducted and supervised by experienced personnel.
In this way HAS Consultants can offer a complete consultancy service.
